SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — This new Boy Scout Troop from South Berwick showed what members have learned while competing in their first Klondike Derby.
The South Berwick scouts took first place for best sled in both junior and senior division, scoring 99 out of 100 points. They also took third place in the junior division for points scored around a course that tested their skills. They had perfect scores in first aid, knots and lashing, and orienteering.
This day-long event held at Camp Nutter in Acton, fortunately had enough snow cover to enable the boys to pull their homemade wooden dog sled, with scouts acting as the "dogs."
The sled had to contain all supplies that they may need to accomplish whatever was asked of them, including making a fire without using matches and cooking lunch withouts utensils within 45 minutes, including cleanup.
The turnout this year was sited as excellent with 80 percent participation despite the very cold conditions. Thirty-one patrols represented 25 troops.
