South Berwick Scouts earn Eagle Award

   SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Kevin Dewildt and Emlen Harmon have become the first scouts from Troop 338 and the first in ten years from South Berwick to earn the Eagle Scout Award. The Eagle Award is the highest award be-stowed in Boy Scouts with less than two percent achieving that rank.
   Kevin started in scouting as a Tiger Cub in 1984, moving up to Cub Scouts in 1983 where Emlen joined him. They were in Cub Scouts together two years and then a Webelo Scout for one year. As a Webelo Scout they both earned the Arrow of Light award which is the highest award given in Cub Scouts.
   Kevin and Emlen are two of the original seven boys that made up the newly formed Boy Scout Troop 338 in the spring of 1988. They have worked in the Troop for five years, advancing themselves, other boys and the troop itself. They have shown leadership skills and have earned the required 21 merit badges. They both are also members of the Order of the Arrow. This organization is of select scouts who are elected by their peers.
   Both boys did extensive service projects also. Kevin designed and organized work parties to create an an outside nature classroom and trails for Marshwood Junior High School.
   Emlen promoted water conservation in the community by designing and distributing a brochure detailing the practices and devices of water conservation.

   Kevin is a sophomore at Marshwood High School where he is a honor roll student. He is also on the school's soccer, basketball and track teams. His other interests include skiing, volleyball and collecting sports cards.
   Emlen is a freshman at Phillips Exeter Academy where he is a member of the junior varsity diving team and baseball team. His other interests include soccer, baseball, skiing and playing both the acoustic and electric guitar.
   The Eagle Court of Honor ceremony was well attended by fellow scouts, families and friends. Representatives Wes Farnum read letters from the president, Senator Cohen, Senator Mitchell, Governor McKernan and the Legislature. Scout Unit Commissioner Rany Cookson also read letters from the Boy Scout National and State Headquarters as well as other lo-cal organizations and businesses. A reception for over 100 people followed the ceremony.
