ROLLINSFORD — Trevor Bergeron of Barrington, a member of Boy Scout Troop 338 in South Berwick, received his "Eagle" rank, scouting's highest honor, at a ceremony June 6 at the Elysium Arts Folk Club in Rollinsford.

Presentations and speeches were made by representatives of the New Hampshire Air National Guard, the Marine Corp League, the South Berwick Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Barrington Conservation Commission and the South Berwick Rod and Gun Association, the troop's sponsor.

Letters of congratulations were read that had been received from President Barack and Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, former President George H.W. and Barbara Bush and others.

Among the requirements for the Eagle rank, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate knowledge of outdoor skills, act in a leadership position in the troop and lead a service project that directly benefits the community. Once the project plan is approved, the scout must recruit volunteers, raise donations of funds and materials from the community, as well as obtain any required state or federal permits.

Upon completion, the scout must present the project, along with all other Eagle requirements, to the District Advancement Committee for final approval.

Bergeron's Eagle project was the construction of a 16-foot bridge and 755 feet of trail in the Samuel A. Tamposi Water Supply Reserve in Barrington to bypass an area of the former trail that had been flooded by a beaver dam.

The project created an accessible, safe, durable bypass trail for hiking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing. Signs and blazes were added to help direct the public onto the new path and ensure it was visible when covered with leaves or snow. Permits and approvals were obtained from the Barrington Town Council, the Conservation Commission, and state DES officials.

Trevor has continued on as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 338. He is also a member of the Seacoast Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.

He graduated from Dover High School this year and will be attending Norwich University in the fall, majoring in information assurance and computer security.
