SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — BSA Troop 338 Eagle Scout candidate Robbie Hundley, 15, a sophomore at Marshwood High, recently completed his leadership project which involved planning, construction and installation of 21 Wood Duck nesting boxes at seven South Berwick locations.

Four of the sites are on Great Works Regional Land Trust properties at Orris Falls, Savage Wildlife Preserve, Leigh's Mill Pond and Rocky Hills. The other locations are Warren Pond, Knight's Pond and Cox's Pond.

Hundley stated, "This project provides needed nesting areas as development trends have removed many of the old trees which provided cavities for duck nests."

The trees selected for the nesting boxes must be a certain height and distance from water. Great Works Regional Land Trust supports the efforts of youth groups in conservation and is pleased to offer the use of land to benefit wildlife, outdoor education and increased awareness of the natural world around us.

A Scout must show leadership in the execution of their project and Robbie recruited seven fellow Scouts and seven adult leaders to help with the tasks. Eliot Agway/Small Engine, South Berwick Rod & Gun Association, The Home Depot and South Berwick Conservation Commission provided donations and Hundley raised private funds for this work which was completed in November and December.

For future monitoring, the locations of the boxes were documented by recording GPS coordinates.
