Norwich University Scouting Association Camporee
The link I had to their news archive expired and the file has been deleted from their server. This note will give some background of one of the most exciting camporee events we’ve participated in.   http://www.norwich.edu/
Norwich University is the oldest private military academy in the country and is located in Northfield, Vermont. Call the Office of the Commandant 1-802-485-2135 and ask for information on this year's NUSA-Camporee. The dates are usually the third weekend in September. They will mail you out an information packet on request. You need to respond quickly as the Camporee fills up rapidly.
They may have up to 1500 Scouts, Scouters, Venture Crew, Explorers and Girl Scouts from all over the Northeast and Canada. The Saturday morning wake up call is a real blast and the action just keeps on happening. You’ll be even more impressed with the overall organization when you learn that this amazing event is staffed, planned and executed solely by the students of the military academy. There are usually at least one to two ‘rooks’ assigned to each campsite to help guide everyone through the weekend activities. They will have their "Mountain Cold Weather Rescue Team" put on demos from the 60 foot repelling tower. The Vermont National Guard will also be there with tanks and other equipment; as will the Air National Guard. There is a mock battle demo of a guerilla/hostage situation. There are up to 25-30 challenge courses and team-building exercises during the day. They have a fireworks display with a huge bonfire on Saturday night, and Ben & Jerrys usually donates cases of Freedom ice cream bars to the scouts.
Cost is approx. $15.00 per person and includes a patch and pin. Norwich University is located in Northfield VT about 12 miles south of Montpelier. This is an event the boys will remember most of their lives. Many students of Norwich have admitted they enrolled at this university because of their experiences at these camporees.
Colonel George Shelley III, USMC (Ret.)
Colonel George Shelley III      Northfield resident Colonel Shelley was also honored during the Board of Fellows' dinner. He served on the University faculty for decades and was instrumental in establishing the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Norwich. He also served as the Professor of Linguistics and Anthropology, teaching courses in two divisions and three different departments.
Shelley drew on his varied experience as a researcher living among tribal people in the hills of Taiwan and as an intelligence officer and field tester of experimental equipment during the Vietnam War to inspire generations of Norwich students to achieve distinction. He went outside the gates of the school and founded the annual Boy Scout Camporee, which annually hosts hundreds of scouts and provides leadership training opportunities for cadets.
